Salary: £25,596 to £34,617 net per annum
Contract Type: Fixed term - 1 year
The impact of the ongoing food crisis in the Sahel region combined with the conflict in the North of Mali and the spread of instability has caused the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Malian civilians, both internally and outside the country. The risk of this becoming an even more significant humanitarian crisis affecting more than 1.6 million people is very real. The populations most vulnerable to the crisis continue to be poor and very poor households, particularly those hosting IDPs, and assistance should be delivered on this basis. Oxfam GB is on the ground with programmes and working with others to alleviate the human suffering. Your expertise and skills will make a real difference.
The role
We are looking for an experienced professional WASH Coordinator to provide leadership and direction (technical assistance) in ensuring that an integrated WASH approach be used in our programmes in Mali. You will be responsible for assessing WASH needs and specific vulnerabilities in the context of humanitarian and development needs. It means working in close collaboration with other teams in order to ensure an integrated approach in meeting the public health needs of beneficiaries and to ensure appropriate integration of comprehensive and cohesive public health components in Mali programmes. In addition to programme development you will implement, adapt, monitor and evaluate public health projects, ranging from engineering (drilling of boreholes, pastoral wells rehabilitation, validating designs for water systems, giving technical approval for procurement of equipment and material) to public health promotion (hygiene practices, sanitation systems, sensitisation campaigns, response to epidemics). You will also provide technical support, training and capacity building of WASH staff, as well as proactively representing Oxfam at appropriate meetings.
What we are looking for
Along with a degree in public health or engineering, you’ll need extensive experience of emergency relief work and a deep professional knowledge of WASH. You’ll also have proven yourself when it comes to emergency water engineering and hygiene promotion. And you’ll certainly be no stranger to building capacity and training staff in the field. Just as important as your technical know-how will be the personal qualities you bring. Diplomatic and tactful, you’ll need the ability to gain people’s trust and respect, then use your influencing skills to get things done. Resilience is also important, as is real strength of character. And from a practical standpoint, we’ll also look for experience of working in West Africa plus fluent French and English. Whilst knowledge of Arabic would be useful.
The rewards
In addition to the competitive salary which will be paid net, with Oxfam meeting the tax and social security liabilities, you will receive a range of attractive benefits including pension, medical, other attractive benefits.
How to apply:
This is an opportunity for an exceptional, dedicated, and highly motivated professional, with a strong commitment to Oxfam's values and beliefs.
