PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Operational in Myanmar since 2008, Mercy Corps has established a strong portfolio of programs in conflict management, civil society strengthening, governance, economic development, and food security. We are currently implementing two conflict management programs in Myanmar. Our conflict management programs focus on empowering local actors to prevent and resolve conflict through training and practical action in conflict analysis and dispute resolution; trust-building and relationship-building activities; and implementation of locally-initiated projects that tangibly address tensions.

Thematic areas covered by our conflict management programs include inter-communal and inter-faith conflicts, , ethnic and inter-faith relations, and the links between conflict & governance. The Sone Hmat program aims to address intercommunal violence and promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence between people of different ethnic and religious communities in Mandalay Region, Southern Shan State, Mon State and and Kayin State. The PROSPER program, implemented in Kayah State (one of Myanmar’s seven ethnic states), aims to promote sustainable peace and development through an integrated suite of peacebuilding, governance, and community-driven development activities.

The Intern will work closely with the Learning and Communications Specialist and and field teams to conduct assessment, monitoring, and evaluation activities for conflict programs, with a heavy emphasis on producing high quality written materials for both internal and external distribution. Activities may include: conducting key informant interviews and focus group discussions, working with field staff and the Mercy Corps M&E team to collect data and manage information, analyzing data, drafting analytic reports, and developing communications materials highlighting findings (e.g., briefs, case studies, or blog posts). Depending on the selected Intern’s technical skills, the Intern may also develop training modules and/or conduct training workshops with field staff and/or program stakeholders on negotiation, conflict analysis, advocacy, etc.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Through the internship process, the intern will gain:

Knowledge and experience in facilitating and documenting qualitative and quantitative studies.

Technical experience in working on conflict management programs in fragile environments.

Experience drafting communication pieces on conflict management based on field-driven data analysis.

Learning through practical experience the dynamics between international NGOs, local civil society organizations, and local governments, including knowledge of partnership structures and MOUs.

Greater awareness of the reality of program implementation in the context of the developing world through on-the-ground observation and facilitation of qualitative and quantitative studies.

Knowledge and experience in Project Management Life Cycle, including Logical Framework, Theories of Change, Performance Indicators, as well as Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning activities.

Through practical field experience, gain a general understanding of Myanmar’s dynamic social, political, economic, and cultural issues, a basic grasp of their underlying causes, and Mercy Corps’ approach to addressing these issues.
