Social Worker

The International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) is a health-based umbrella organization that supports the rehabilitation of torture victims and the prevention of torture worldwide, with a membership of more than 140 independent rehabilitation centres in more than 70 countries.
We are seeking a Full Time Social Worker to provide psycho-social support for torture survivors in Libya. The contract is initially for one year, with the possibility of extension depending on funding. This post is based at the rehabilitation centre in Tripoli and will work closely with the Director of Center and other specialists in collaboration with our partner in Libya, the World Organization against Torture (OMCT). Our work in Libya is generously funded by the European Commission and we offer a competitive salary.
This post will appeal to those with a passion for helping survivors of torture to rehabilitate and who are keen to be part of the team building services in Libya to support those directly affected by torture, their families and the communities they live in. You will have an interest in working as part of the global and regional rehabilitation sector. You will bring experience of psycho-social services in Libya and preferably have experience in the rehabilitation and/or mental health sector. You will be familiar with and keen to interact with colleagues in the Libyan public and private psycho-social and health services sector. You will work in close cooperation with our Project Manager in Tripoli and be actively supported by a team of rehabilitation experts based in Denmark and throughout the MENA region.
Responsibilities of the social worker:
• Conduct needs assessment of clients seeking the assistance of the centre or who are referred to the centre by others. This needs assessment includes a baseline assessments consistent with international guidelines;
• Counseling clients and patients in individual and group sessions to assist them in dealing with psychological and physical abuse, mental and physical illnesses, unemployment and substance abuse;
• Collaborate with existing health structures and local authorities, and conferring with other professionals to evaluate mental or physical conditions of clients or patients;
• Collaborating with other health professionals to plan and coordinate treatment, drawing on social work experience and patient needs;
• Monitoring, evaluating, and recording client and patient progress with respect to treatment goals;
• Counseling and aiding family members to assist them in understanding, dealing with, and supporting the client or patient;
• Developing or advising on social policy and assisting in community development;
• Evaluating individual and collective ex-detainees and IDPs conditions providing psycho-social services and guiding them to (health) services when needed;
• Examining specific cases and documenting instances of torture and other types of ill-treatment, both physical and psychological;
• Ensuring good respect of confidentiality related to patients;
• Ensuring quality services follow-up and if necessary referring to other facilities;
• Attending training sessions related to the subject of work and the post;
• Ensuring close cooperation with our partner OMCT in this project to build synergies in our work to ensure the rehabilitation of survivors of torture.
Personal Specifications:
• Must be qualified as social worker with a MA degree in social work or psychology with 3+ years clinical experience;
• Knowledge of therapy and counseling principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions, and for career counseling and guidance.
• Knowledge of psychology notions such as human behavior, individual differences, personality, psychological research methods and the assessment and treatment of behavioral disorders.
• Experience in dealing with national (MoH, primary care, CSO) and international partners (WHO, iNGOs, UN, EU, etc.);
• Knowledge of the region, particularly of the Libyan context and a proven experience in working in similar environments;
• Prepared to work under pressure and stress in a potentially dangerous environment;
• Experience in working in the field of health and human rights;
• Experience in writing expert opinions for legal purposes.
• Knowledge of the Istanbul Protocol on how to conduct an effective documentation of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment is an asset;
Personal Attributes:
• Organization skills, self-disciplined, flexibility;
• A high interest and passion for working in the field of human rights;
• Comfortable working in an international environment and cross culturally;
• Ability to work under pressure and to work remotely from some other members of the team;
• Ability to work as a team player, share knowledge widely, build relationships and partnerships;
• Ability to work with current technology such as Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook;
• Driving License and willingness to travel within Libya.
